As a pet owner, you want to protect and care for your pet as well as possible. The better you care for your pet, the more likely he is to have a long, happy, and healthy life. Making sure your pet gets enough exercise every day will keep him happy and improve his physical and mental health. You should always check with your veterinarian before you make any changes to your pet’s diet or exercise routine, however. Watch out for these warning signs your pet isn’t getting enough exercise, and consult with your veterinarian if you recognize any of them in your pet.
Gaining Weight
If your pet is gaining weight, it could be a sign that he is not getting enough daily exercise. It could also be a symptom of an underlying health problem. You should schedule an appointment with your veterinarian if your pet starts gaining weight or is in danger of becoming obese. Obesity increases your pet’s risk of heart disease, liver disease, kidney problems, diabetes, joint pain, stiffness, arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other health issues.
Acting Destructive
If your pet isn’t getting enough exercise, he is probably also bored. He may start acting out in destructive ways to let you know that he is unhappy. If your pet starts tearing up or chewing up things in your house, is scratching the furniture, keeps getting into the trash can, or is relieving himself in inappropriate places, you need to redirect his energy elsewhere. The best way to do this is to tire him out with some exercise or play time.
Acting Bored or Withdrawn
Some pets may become bored, withdrawn, or depressed if they aren’t getting enough exercise or daily attention. If your pet has lost interest in activities he once enjoyed, is acting listless or fatigued, or seems depressed, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian. It’s possible you need to make some changes to your pet’s diet and exercise routine.
Make an appointment with your veterinarian today if you recognize any of these behaviors in your pet.
