Our Veterinarians

Dr. Barbara Cain

Co-Owner, Veterinarian

Although she grew up on a cattle ranch in Portland surrounded by dogs, cats, and cattle, Dr. Barbara Cain initially satisfied her love of science by pursuing an engineering degree in college. During her studies, she volunteered at the Oregon Zoo and worked as an assistant at a nearby veterinary clinic. It didn’t take long for Dr. Cain to realize something—for her, working with animals was no work at all! She decided to follow her true passion and devote herself to veterinary medicine.

While earning her Bachelor’s degree in biology, Dr. Cain was offered a position working in the Oregon Zoo’s endocrine laboratory, and was also offered a zookeeper position. She began conducting research related to Asian elephant behavior while working on her Master’s degree—Dr. Cain has authored and co-authored several articles on the subject—and then applied to veterinary school to earn her Doctorate.

Dr. Cain first came to Linwood Animal Clinic in the summer of 2003 as an Associate Veterinarian. Two years later, she had the opportunity to purchase the practice, and is now Co-Owner with her husband, Scott. Medically, Dr. Cain is fond of internal medicine and surgery, but her favorite part of the workday is getting to meet a wide variety of animals and their loving owners.

Dr. Cain and her husband have four children—Amanda, Aaron, Alan, and Megan—and share their home with two cats, a dog, and an African Grey parrot named Jazz who comes to work with the Cains every day. When she isn’t tending to pets here at the hospital, Dr. Cain enjoys traveling with her family and is particularly fond of the Caribbean Islands. She and Scott also own a small beach house on the Oregon coast, where they enjoy relaxing and playing with their dog on the beach.

Dr. Kim Emery

Associate Veterinarian

The majority of Dr. Kim Emery’s after-school activities while growing up were related to animals. She raised rabbits, sheep, and even a goose for the 4-H organization, and was also involved in raising a puppy for the Guide Dogs for the Blind program. She’s known that she wanted to help animals as a veterinary professional for as long as she can remember!

Dr. Emery is originally from Southern California; her veterinary career began there when she started volunteering for a local animal clinic during high school. She then attended the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, earning her Bachelor’s degree in animal science, before working locally for several years as a veterinary assistant. Next, Dr. Emery headed overseas to attend veterinary school in Dublin, Ireland—she remained there for six years while finishing her degree and interning in small-animal medicine.

Dr. Emery joined the Linwood Animal Clinic family in the summer of 2007 after she and her family moved to the Portland area for her husband’s promotion. Her favorite part of the job is puppy and kitten visits—for her, there’s nothing better than seeing how quickly a bond forms between a new pet and their owner! Dr. Emery is proud to be the first to educate pet owners on the importance of preventative care, proper socialization, and training.

Dr. Emery and her husband live with their twin son and daughter, two dogs, a pair of cats, a Hamster named Wonder and a leopard gecko named Neville Longbottom. When she isn’t spending time with her family and pets or tending to animals here at the hospital, Dr. Emery enjoys camping, hiking, and reading. She’s also currently training for her first 10K race!
