Keeping Your Cat Happy and Healthy

September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! Of course, we think kitties deserve to be happy all the time. It actually doesn’t take very much to keep your feline pal’s motor running. Here, a Happy Valley, OR vet offers tips on keeping Fluffy purring.

Good Food

Proper nutrition is a crucial part of any good pet-care regimen. Offer your cat a nourishing, high-quality brand of pet food.

Playing is great entertainment for Fluffy. It’s also fun for us to watch! Kitties are pretty adorable when they are pouncing on catnip mice or chasing that elusive red dot. Offer your feline buddy plenty of fun toys, and play with her regularly.

We all know that cats take their beauty rest very, very seriously. However, Fluffy can’t spend all of her time sleeping. She will need stimulation when she’s awake. A comfy window seat is a great option. Kitties love watching birds and wildlife! They also like to explore things. Offer your cute pet lots of cat furniture, and set out some pet-safe plants for her to sniff.

Veterinary Care

Fluffy may not be thrilled about coming to visit us, but she’ll both look and feel better with proper veterinary care. We recommend that all cats be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on their vaccinations and parasite control products. Of course, if your pet ever gets sick or injured, she’ll need emergency care. Ask your vet for more information.

Cats definitely have a knack for getting themselves into trouble. That’s one reason we recommend keeping them inside, where they’re protected from the dangers posed by cars, predators, weather, and other hazards. It’s also a good idea to do some basic kittyproofing. Remove or secure anything you don’t want Fluffy playing with. This includes things like toxic plants, plastic bags and ties, small and sharp objects, chemicals, and medication.

Kitty Comforts

Small touches will help keep Fluffy content and comfortable. Keep your cat’s litterbox clean, and make sure she has lots of comfy beds to snuggle up in.

Cats are very emotional, and can get extremely attached to their humans. Pay attention to Fluffy, and offer her lots of cuddles and ear scritches. Purrs are truly precious gifts in our book!
