Choosing the Right Spot for Your Birdcage

Are you adopting a pet bird? If so, you’ve chosen a delightful and charming little pet. Birds are not only super cute, they are very fun and lovable, and can make wonderful animal companions. A large part of good bird care is making sure that your colorful little pet is comfortable and happy in her birdcage. Choosing the right birdcage is of course very important: you’ll want to be sure to pick a cage that is suitable for your pet’s size and species. Picking the right spot for the birdcage is also crucial. Read on as a Happy Valley, OR veterinarian offers some advice on choosing the best location for your birdcage.

Temperature

Avoid setting your birdcage in direct sunlight, as your pet could easily overheat. You also want to avoid putting your bird’s cage too close to a ceiling fan, or in a drafty area.

Noise

Too much noise can make your colorful pet uneasy. Your bird won’t be happy right in front of a TV or stereo! Be sure not to put your bird’s cage in a loud area.

Fumes

Don’t put your bird too near the kitchen or garage. Birds have extremely sensitive lungs. Fumes from cooking or chemicals can make your winged pet very sick! If you enjoy painting or doing crafts that require chemicals, don’t put your birdcage near your working space.

Exposure

Your bird will get lonely if she’s all alone in a back bedroom, but she won’t be comfortable in the middle of the busiest room in the house, either. You’ll want to put your cute pet’s home in a quiet area, where she can still see and interact with you, but isn’t in the center of things. Many birds feel safer in corners, as they don’t feel as exposed there. Tips

Setting non-toxic plants around your bird’s cage can help her feel more comfortable in her home. The plants may remind your pet of trees, which are, of course, a bird’s natural environment. If you have cats or dogs, you’ll want to be sure to put your bird’s cage in a place where they can’t reach her.
